Un tour con ben poco da dire: la band resta la stessa (con sempre Emory Gordy al basso), ma si sente che l'affiatamento con Elvis non e' quello di sempre. Questo e' l'ultimo ingaggio di quattro settimane che Elvis fece all'Hotel Hilton (dal 74 in poi l'ingaggio venne dimezzato). Si tratta infatti dell'ultimo ELVIS SUMMER FESTIVAL. Quattro settimane di concerti che registrarono il tutto esaurito. Elvis stette davvero molto male durante buona parte dell'ingaggio e la stampa noto' che era aumentato di peso in maniera eccessiva rispetto all'ingaggio precedente. Da sengalare il fatto che appena un mese dopo la fine di questo ingaggio Elvis si divorzio' ufficialmente da Priscilla e otto giorni dopo questo fatto venne ricoverato di urgenza al Baptist Hospital di Memphis per una gravissima crisi respiratoria. Sarebbe tornato a cantare nel gennaio del 1974.

Dopo un lungo periodo di riabilitazione che duro'circa un paio di mesi (quelli successivi al ricovero in ospedale nell'ottobre 1973), Elvis torno' sul palco. Il ritorno avvenne come prassi a Las Vegas. C'era molta tensione nell'aria dopo il pessimo 1973 in cui Elvis era stato autore di pessime esecuzioni. Si era rimesso in forma seguendo le indicazioni dei medici ed era tornato ad appassionarsi alla musica; fu un fatto questo molto positivo che non accadeva da molto tempo. Nel dicembre 1973 presso gli studi della STAX, Elvis tenne una settimana di registrazioni per un suo nuovo album: fu una delle piu' importanti e belle session che fece nella sua carriera (l'album, PROMISED LAND, sarebbe uscito poi nel 1975).
Il 24 gennaio Elvis e la sua band (con due elementi nuovi: al basso arrivo' il giovane Duke Bardwe.., e al coro vennero aggiunti i Voice) si presentarono all'Hotel Hilton Room in cui iniziarono le prove per il nuovo ingaggio. Il materiale che Elvis scelse fu molto interessante: vennero ripresi i brani classici, ma sempre belli, di alcuni anni prima, come You've Lost That Loving Feeling, Sweet Caroline, Polk Salad Annie. Il nuovo brano che divenne un classico fu Let Me Be There che piaceva moltissimo ad Elvis. Gli arrangiamenti furono piu' curati e si tennero davvero degli ottimi concerti. Anche la stampa noto'che l'atmosfera sembrava cambiata dall'anno precedente: Elvis era sceso di peso e stava meglio.
Anche l'ingaggio era stato cambiato: per volere del medico personale di Elvis (il dottor Nick), l'ingaggio non era piu' di 4 settimane ma di 2. Visto che il 26 gennaio di quell'anno veniva di venerdì, il classico Opening Show riservato alle celebrita' venne spostato al giorno dopo (anche perche' si voleva evitare di entrare in conflitto con il rientro di Frank Sinastra al CEASAR PALACE e quindi per l'apertura Elvis fece due concerti.

Dopo il successo con il ritorno a Las Vegas Elvis e la band si concentrarono su un nuovo tour. Elvis si era rimesso in forma anche se c'era il timore che potesse ricadere nei problemi avuti durante il 1973. Il tour si rivelo' un successo. L'atmosfera era di nuovo quella che si era respirata durante il 1972 (anche molte localita' che toccarono vennero gia'visitate durante il tour di due anni prima). Da segnalare e' il ritorno di Elvis al Mith-South Coliseum di Memphis: l'ultima volta che il pubblico lo aveva visto cantare era avvenuto ben tredici anni prima. In questo tour torno' nella sua citta' il 16 e il 17 marzo con 4 spettacoli che registrarono il tutto esaurito. Il colonnello Parker, visto il grande successo di pubblico, decise di fissare uno spettacolo in piu' che avvenne l'ultimo giorno del tour , sempre al Mith South Coliseum; da questo concerto la RCA fece uscire il cd RECORDED LIVE ON STAGE IN MEMPHIS.

Qui dobbiamo fare alcune precisazioni. Si tratta di un momento importante e fondamentale per tutto il proseguimento della carriera di Elvis. Dopo un anno caratterizzato da buoni spettacoli Elvis aveva come ogni estate il classico ingaggio a Las Vegas (ingaggio che era stato dimezzato da 4 a 2 settimane di spettacoli per le sue condizioni fisiche precarie avute durante tutto il 1973). Dopo il tour di meta'  giugno Elvis decise di prendersi un periodo di tempo per rimettersi informa e per cercare del nuovo materiale musicale da far esordire a Las Vegas. L'idea di Elvis era di modificare la scaletta delle canzoni che ormai da quasi 2 anni era rimasto pressocche' invariato.
Lui e la band arrivarono a Las Vegas il 16 agosto, giorno in cui incominciarono le prove per lo spettacolo di apertura del 19. Erano due anni che Elvis non faceva prove cosi' approfondite. Praticamente vennero eseguite in 2 giorni tutte le nuove canzoni e alcuni pezzi che non cantava da diverso tempo. Era di nuovo in forma. E se ascoltiamo le prove del 16 agosto (che possiamo trovare in diversi bootleg, ma a questo vi rimando alla sezione bootleg ancora per poco non disponibile qui nel forum) sentiamo una voce diversa. Piu' intensa e con un timbro piu' forte; insomma un Elvis molto vicino agli spettacoli del 69-70. La voglia di cambiare, di dare una svolta era davvero forte. E lo possiamo sentire nel primo concerto (quello fondamentale) di questo ingaggio. Elvis inizia improvvisamente con BIg Boss Man senza 2001 Odissea nello Spazio, canta Proud Mary (abbandonato nel 72), Never Been To Spain, Down In The Alley. Nuove canzoni come It's Midnight, If You Love Me (Let Me Know) acquistano un grande successo. E' un concerto in cui Elvis da il massimo di se ed e' forse il migliore dopo il grande successo delle Hawaii. Tutto però finì presto. Dalla sera successiva Elvis tornò nella solita routine e con un repertorio modificato solo in alcune parti. Molti attribuiscono questo repentino ritorno agli standard di sempre al pubblico poco entusiasta durante l'opening night. Forse e' cosi'; se si ascolta il concerto infatti non sentiamo davvero una grande euforia. Fatto sta che le cose tornarono come sempre. Elvis tenne degli ottimi concerti fino al 24 agosto. La sera del 25 canto' con la febbre e il 26 vennero annullati i due spettacoli. Se sentiamo il confronto con l'opening e i concerti successivi, la differenza e' abissale. Elvis sembra proprio che si stava abbandonando a se stesso: lo dimostra anche il fatto che durante la fine di questo ingaggio era di nuovo aumentato di peso in modo preoccupante.
Insomma questo ingaggio e'da molti sottovalutato ma in realta' e' il piu' importante nella carriera di Elvis; alla fine, nel midnight show del 2 settembre, quello che va in scena non e' l'Elvis che il pubblico aveva visto in quegli anni. Era un Elvis diverso, che si ribella alla stampa, un Elvis indifeso rispetto al solito. Un Elvis triste. Poteva davvero essere l'ingaggio della svolta e invece Elvis incappo' in quel tunnel di depressione e tristezza , da quale non ne usci' piu'.

Un tour davvero faticoso e molto triste per Elvis. Tutti i tentativi per rimettersi in forma erano falliti. In alcune di queste perfomance Elvis (lo possiamo sentire ad esempio nel cd DRAGON HEART) non riusciva a controllare la proprie emozioni, andando cosi' ad eseguire alcuni pezzi in modo un pò troppo forzato. Un fatto si puo' sottolineare; e cioe' alla prima sera del tour, proprio il 27 settembre, Tony Brown fu testimone della caduta di Elvis appena scese dalla sua macchina. Per tutto il concerto Elvis rimase fermo sul palco ed canto' per poco piu' di mezzora.
