E' con questo tour che si costruiscono le basi per il futuro dei concerti di Elvis. Oltre all'abbigliamento e alla scaletta di canzoni che ancora riproponeva buona parte del materiale eseguito durante l'anno, di novità troviamo l'addio degli Imperials. Al loro posto vennero gli Stamps e JD Sumner. Elvis fu in ottima forma per tutto il tour anche se i livelli raggiunti durante il 69-70 parevano inspiegabilmente irrangiungibili.

La grande rivoluzione nel repertorio di Elvis, avviene con questo nuovo ingaggio a Las Vegas. Elvis giunse a Las Vegas con un aspetto fisico migliore rispetto all'estate precedente e con tante canzoni nuove e nuovi arrangiamenti. Si tratta di ballade melodiche molto belle che vennero arrangiate e rese sempre piu' fluide nel corso di tutto l'ingaggio. Possiamo dire che con questo ingaggio (possiamo dire anche con il primo concerto di questo tour) si concretizzano le basi dei futuri concerti di Elvis. Il pubblico accolse con grande entusiasmo i nuovi pezzi come "Never Been To Spain", "You Gave Me A Mountain", "Until It's Time For You To Go", "See See Rider" (che divenne dal concerto di apertura in poi l'inizio fisso di ogni concerto) e il famoso medley "An American Trilogy" che divenne la parte centrale di ogni spettacolo.
La RCA decise di registrare alcuni concerti per raccoglieredel materiale live da aggiungere alla futura sessione di registrazione che Elvis avrebbe fato a marzo.
Curiosita' : dal gennaio 1972 il famoso International Hotel sara'  chiamato Hotel Hilton, in quanto venne acquistato dall'omonima catena alberghiera.

Questo e' il tour piu' famoso di Elvis e forse quello che ebbe maggior successo in assoluto. Fu il tour che venne ripreso per il documentario ELVIS ON TOUR. La MGM filmo' alcuni concerti i quali oggi sono usciti anche in cd di ottime qualita' . Per i primi giorni del tour l'euforia e l'improvvisazione furono le caratteristiche principali di ogni concerto che trovarono il punto piu' alto nell'evining show all'Hampton Roads del 9 aprile. I concerti seguenti furono tutti di altissima qualita' e forse il migliore resta quello eseguito a Greensboro (anche se il meccanismo era gia' ben oliato).

Altro tour e altri concerti molto spettacolari. In particolare vanno segnalate le quattro performance al Madison Square Garden per le quali vennero registrati i due concerti della giornata del 10 giugno. Per il grande successo di pubblico (tutto esaurito per tutti e tre gli spettacoli), il Colonnello Parker decise di aggiungervi anche un concerto in piu' che venne fatto il pomeriggio dell'11 giugno. Un tour davvero di ottime qualita' e per il materiale musicale forse anche superiore al tour di aprile. Durante il concerto di chiusura del 4 settembre Elvis tenne una conferenza stampa insieme al Colonnello Parker in cui venne annunciata la notizia di un concerto in mondovisione che doveva aver luogo ad Honolulu. Fu l'ultimo tour dell'anno e il momento piu' importante furono gli ultimi due giorni ad Honolulu. Per problemi di impianti audio lo show in mondo visione venne rimandato al mese di gennaio. Fu lo stesso un grande successo. L'ultimo tour dell'anno registro' il tutto esaurito in tutti gli spettacoli e si concluse un anno davvero intenso di spettacoli.

Con queste due date vengono scritte altre pagine di storia musicale. Dopo il grande successo degli anni precedenti Elvis raggiunge il top con il concerto via satellite del 14 gennaio 73 ad Honolulu. Fu il primo concerto ad essere trasmesso in piu' di trenta paesi contemporaneamente. Dal punto di vista musicale si raggiunge un livello davvero insuperabile. Vennero fatti due concerti: il 12 gennaio fu la volta del concerto prova; questo concerto venne interamente registrato e venne eseguito davanti al pubblico. Fu una prova generale di tutto il materiale musicale scelto da Elvis per l'occasione. Rispetto al concerto di due giorni dopo ci sono alcune imperfezioni che le riscontriamo se osserviamo lo show (ad esempio un'esecuzione imperfetta di Buring Love).
Per quanto riguarda invece il concerto del 14 gennaio, c'e' poco da dire: e' forse il pu' bel concerto di Elvis nella sua storia musicale. Di sicuro dopo questo non ce ne furono (purtroppo) altri di tale perfezione. Il colonnello Parker fece uscire il concerto in cd (ALOHA FROM HAWAII VIA SATELLITE)e si piazzo' al vertice delle classifiche. Rimane un dubbio tutt'oggi non ancora risolto: il numero esatto di persone che guardo'quel giorno lo show. I maggiori critici musicali sostengono che furono piu' di un miliardo e mezzo .

Con questo ennesimo ingaggio di 4 settimane cominciarono i problemi per Elvis. Dopo il successo delle Hwaii si abbandono' a se stesso e tutti notarono il cambiamento che fece appena quindici giorni dopo negli spettacoli all'Hotel Hilton. Elvis aumento'di peso in pochissimo tempo e in ogni concerto sembro' sempre più affaticato (in alcuni casi fu costretto ad eseguire concerti molto brevi e alcuni vennero cancellati in quanto Elvis venne ricoverato in ospedale). Nonostante questo si rivelò un ingaggio di grande successo.

Pochi giorni dopo la fine del tour ecco un lungo ingaggio al Tahoe Hotel per bene 17 giorni. La stampa noto' subito che Elvis era in evidente sovrappeso e che appariva molto affaticato in ogni esibizione. Dal punto di vista discografico c'e' pochissimo da segnalare se non l'unico cd ufficiale di questo ingaggio e' il cd TAKE TAHOE TONIGHT (e' il concerto delle 3 del mattino del 13 maggio, giorno in cui Elvis fece tre concerti). Fu un ingaggio molto triste e interrotto dall'improvviso ricovero in ospedale del cantante.
